The Real Deal: Clarke Lamont’s 1969 Yenko Camaro

Spotted at the 2015 Goodguys Southwest Nationals in Scottsdale, Arizona, we happened to stumble across this beauty in the collection of beautiful classic and custom rods in attendance.

Owned by Clarke Lamont of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Calgary, Alberta in Canada, this 1969 Chevy Camaro is one unique and rare musclecar with Yenko components and authenticity. With such a limited production run, it is not often that we get to see a true Yenko Camaro at a car show.

“The miles are low and I don’t plan on getting rid of this car, regardless of how sought after it becomes,” said Lamont. “The engine and body are stock. The only thing aftermarket are the wheels and tires, the suspension, and the transmission.”

The beefy 427 cubic-inch L-72 V8 provides plenty of power for this timeless classic, and a set of American Racing wheels and BF Goodrich T/A rubbers add style, flair, and functionality to the package. A Richmond six-speed manual transmission and a Hurst shifter help put power to the pavement, and various Hotchkis suspension parts keep handling predictable and precise.

With the Yenko-accented paint still immaculate, and original badging in pristine condition, what is there bad to say about this Camaro? It’s rare, it’s mostly original, and most of all, it’s not a clone. “I let the car speak for itself,” said Lamont. “There are guys that come to these shows and say it’s not real, but the proof is in the pudding.”

We commend Yenko’s simple and functional aerodynamic design with the front and rear lip spoiler. A step away from a Superbird’s towering wing, the Yenko Camaro stands in a class of its own with its sleeper status and subtle visual changes that don’t really tell you it’s a beast until it hits full throttle.

No matter which way you see it, this Yenko Camaro has it all.

The first-generation Camaro is an ageless design wonder, and it is no wonder the fifth-gen Camaro used several aesthetics taken from the original generation.

With power-assisted disc brakes, a 4.10-geared rearend with heat treated axles, and a front anti-sway bar, the Yenko Camaro was clearly ahead of its time and showed Chevrolet’s dedication to building a street legal supercar for the average consumer. Lamont’s decision to drop in a six-speed transmission versus the original Muncie four-speed transmission was a great decision since he can now achieve more road speed through each gear. A true treat for the final show for the 2015 Goodguys show season, the event was a success simply for its attendance and positive camaraderie.

Would you have done it any different than Lamont? Is he wrong to change out some of the original components? Feel free to share your thoughts and opinions below.
