Speedway Motors is America’s Oldest Speed Shop and has been a trusted source for high performance parts for street rods and racing for almost 60 years. The family-owned and run business has built a long-standing reputation for providing friendly, expert advice and superior service.
The company’s founder and owner, “Speedy” Bill Smith developed an early passion for performance. He began racing motorcycles as a teenager, moving to cars in 1948. Bill was able to recognize his limits as a driver and after a few races behind the wheel of roaring roadsters, he decided to concentrate on building and campaigning race cars instead.
In 1952, 22-year-old Bill decided to pursue his love of cars and racing by opening Speedway Motors, one of the Midwest’s first speed shops. The business grew quickly, expanding into a 5,000 sq. ft. building by 1954 and starting its own fiberglass manufacturing facility for making street rod and race car bodies in the ’60s.
You’ll still find Bill in his office every day unless he’s attending a race. His wife, Joyce, has been by his side since the beginning and continues to be involved in daily activities. The couple’s four sons – Carson, Craig, Clay and Jason – are also active in the company’s day-to-day operations.
When it comes to performance parts for classic cars and hot rods, Speedway carries the top names, like AFCO, Safety Racing, Simpson, Fel-Pro, Comp Cams, Dynatech, Speedway, Holley, MSD, Dynamat, Auto Meter, Impact Racing, ARP Fasteners, Ididit, Bassett, HushMat, Bilstein, Kirkey, Dart, Moroso, Edelbrock, Mahle, Winters, Lokar, Offenhauser, Mr. Roadster, Ridetech, Painless, Wilwood and KB Pistons.
In 1992, Bill and Joyce founded The Museum of American Speed in Lincoln, NE, a 135,000 sq. ft. museum presenting a chronology of automotive Racing Engine and Speed Equipment development in America. We are pleased to welcome this American institution to the powerTV band of premium supporters. If you’re running a hot rod or classic Chevy, you need to swing by their web site and check it out.
