Just a few days ago, the first few Z/28 Camaros were delivered to dealerships for sale. The first two cars were dropped off at legendary motorsports figure Rick Hendrick’s Hendrick Chevrolet in Charlotte, NC, with the proceeds for the cars going to charity. The third and fourth machines went to General Motors for safekeeping. Number five went to Jeff Gordon Chevrolet, and the sixth one went to David Maus Chevrolet in Sanford, Florida – where you can purchase it for the tidy sum of $76,165.

The build of the Z/28 production fleet commenced on March 24th – so these cars were put together with quickness and shipped out the door to a public that has been clamoring for the release of a real Z/28 (not a tape-stripe model) for decades, and GM has finally delivered on the promise of a real track-ready car. 

The 2014 Z/28 is billed as the fastest street-legal Camaro ever produced by Chevrolet and features a 7.0L LS7 engine packing a whopping 500 horsepower and 470 foot-pounds of torque. Not only does it have plenty of horsepower, it’s been engineered for track duty with a dry sump oiling system, titanium valves, and a high-lift camshaft.

In addition, a cold air induction system, K&N air filter, and Z/28-spec intake and exhaust manifolds help to achieve the power figures. Carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes are standard, as is a full body kit including a front splitter and underbody panel to improve track manners. It’s also approximately 300 pounds lighter than a regular production car. Recaro front seats are also standard, solidifying the Z/28’s standing as a true track machine. There will be 500 cars produced for 2014, and rumor has it that number will increase to 1,500 units in 2015 to satisfy demand.
