In 1967, notable race car driver Donald Yenko began to modify Chrevrolet SS Camaros to create muscle cars with superior performance. Yenko transplanted L-72 Corvette 427cui engines into the Camaros as well as upgrade the rear axel and suspension. In 1969, Yenko special-ordered 201 COPO Camaros -cars that were equipped with 427s straight from the factory- and added his own touches to them before they were sold. Recently, one of these COPO certified 1969 Camaros surfaced as part of an upcoming Mecum auction. This could be your chance to own one of these rare and historic, high-performance Camaros.
True to Yenko-style, the ‘69 Yenko Camaro comes equipped with a 427cui, 425hp L-72 engine. It has a four-speed transmission, power front disc brakes and power steering. The Camaro was recently finished in Fathom Green with a new black interior and black vinyl top. Front and rear spoilers give this Yenko a more aggressive look. To top it off, this Camaro sits atop Atlas wheels.
This Yenko Camaro comes complete with its Yenko bill of sale, dealer transfer sheet and owner history through 1978. To add to its appeal, this Yenko was COPO certified in 2005, the same year that it was the Supercar Registry’s feature car.
If you’re interested in bidding on this rare Camaro, it will be available at the St. Charles, Illinois Mecum auction. It is set to cross the auction block on Saturday September 17th at 2p.m. While this car is definitely a gem, we hope that the new owner lets it loose every now and again, allowing it to fulfill its ultimate purpose- to dominate on the street and on the track.
