Centerforce Introduces New Hydraulic Clutch Release Bearing

Classic muscle cars have a wider variety of transmission options than ever. Owners no longer have to suffer with ancient 4-speeds or frail 5-speeds — aftermarket companies are building beefed-up modern transmissions with the necessary swap components for many popular muscle cars.

One of the most popular modern manuals is the Tremec T-56 6-speed, thanks to its strength, parts availability, cost and size. Still, swapping in a T-56 can present some challenges. If the ancillary parts aren’t right, damage to the transmission or clutch can result. Possibly the most important of these is the throw-out bearing.

The clutch slave cylinder and release bearing are absolutely critical to proper clutch actuation. The slave cylinder transmits the force applied to the clutch master cylinder to the release bearing, allowing the clutch to disengage and you to shift gears. In an OE application, these parts are all designed specifically to work with one another. Once components are swapped — transmission, bellhousing, clutch — then tolerances can stack and go out of spec.

Centerforce now has a solution: the new Long Travel Hydraulic Slave & Release Bearing. It allows the slave/bearing to compensate for tolerance variations by offering a longer range of travel compared to a normal push-style bearing. This requires less precision for the installer. For the user, the main benefit is longer clutch life — the longer-travel bearing allows the clutch to release longer into its service life as the friction surfaces wear.

Centerforce designed this system to work with push-style clutches (Centerforce and other aftermarket brands) in conjunction with a Tremec T-56 using an aftermarket bellhousing and an aftermarket clutch master cylinder. The bearing has been designed to be used with -03 AN hose fittings. The kit includes a steel braided line that has been covered with a black heat-resistant sleeve to protect the line from heat and damage. Additionally, a factory-style male quick-disconnect has been included as a connection option.
