According to research by Eric Gill, there were 15 1963 “Specially Assigned” Z06 optioned Corvettes produced in the fall of 1962, which were destined for a number of the big racers of the day including Bob Bondurant, Dave McDonald, and a few to the team drivers for Gulf Oil. Aside from a host of other well known names, Mickey Thompson was to receive four of the awesome cars and there were quickly many more racers longing for Chevy’s new racer then there were cars available.
In fact, Thompson eventually owned five Z06 coupes. Two were prepared and used at the Daytona Continental Three Hours race while two others were altered and prepped for their use at the Daytona American Challenge. Oddly enough, this leaves one more Z06 that never saw this type of competition. The fifth car, labeled chassis number 6844 remained in its stock configuration and was used as somewhat of a daily driver by Mr. Thompson.
According to our friends at Mecum Auctions this car has number of features worth mentioning including:
- Previously known to be “The Sears/Allstate Tire Test Car”
- #6844 was also used as the advertising model for Mickey Thompson mag wheels
- L84, 327/360 hp fuel injection
- M20, close-ratio 4-speed transmission
- N03, 36 gallon fuel tank
If this isn’t enough to get you excited for the upcoming Florida auction, the winner of the auction will also be receiving Mickey Thompson’s original Chevron credit card which was left inside the vehicle.
While many were of the belief that this was the salt flat car from Thompson’s collection, after much research it turned out this was infact his personal car, and the credit card helps to make the case. All things considered, it is estimated that the car will fetch between $725,000 and $850,000.
