The rear quarter panels on The Build’s 1965 Malibu SS have seen quite a bit of work, from teardowns to patchwork, but ultimately, they were meant to be re-skinned all together. A few weeks ago, our weekly Malibu Monday episode of The Build showed the beginning of that re-skinning process, and this week, the American Modern crew finishes it up. Check it out in the video above.
With Claims Specialist Rick Hardbarger as our guide this week, we get to watch as the classic Malibu’s rear quarters get the love and attention they deserve. Although the patch job which was originally attempted was done with good intentions, it just wasn’t going to cut it for the classic beauty. So under Rick Drewry’s guidance, the re-skinning process began.
When we left off last time with body work, the new quarter panel skins had just been welded on. In this round of the project, things have progressed, giving Hardbarger plenty of grinding work to do before body filler can be applied to the area.
Once ground smooth, the new quarters received a light coat of body filler just to fill in any voids created in the re-skinning process. Then it was back to the sanding block for the ’65 as the body filler was smoothed out and prepped for paint.
The next step will be priming the quarters, which will happen along with the rest of the car in the near future. Be sure to check back next week to check out American Modern’s latest progress on their awesome Malibu build!
