Late last year the automotive blogosphere exploded with news that a Chevrolet Volt had caught fire (three weeks after a crash test, we should point out) and the NHTSA was investigating the safety of the Volt’s battery pack. Ultimately, GM introduced a safety upgrade, as well as ensuring that instructions on discharging the battery to prevent future fires reached the proper channels.
That is now behind GM, though a new unexplained fire could stir up the hornet’s nest of accusations once more. WSBTV out of Atlanta filed a report that says GM is now investigating the cause of a mysterious fire occurring in a 5th Gen Camaro that was sitting with the engine off for about three hours.
According to the report, Jamie Taylor parked her ironically-painted 2012 Inferno Orange Camaro outside, turning off the ignition and going into her apartment. Three hours later she came outside to find fire engines and her Camaro quite literally an inferno. Even worse, the fire spread to a Chevy Equinox SUV that was parked nearby, totaling both vehicles. Pardon the pun, but that burns.
Investigators have so far ruled out foul play, and GM says it isn’t currently investigating any other Camaro fires. So this could just be an isolated event, although GM has now opened their own investigation into what exactly happened. Is there a faulty part at work, or just bad luck? We’ll stay on top of it to see if this is a symptom of a wider-ranging issue.
For now, Jamie will be driving another Camaro loaned to her by a local dealer; here’s hoping both owners get this mystery sorted out.
