With the Camaro ZL1 set to be released next spring, it is no surprise that a convertible model would follow soon after. Promising to be one of the most powerful production convertibles ever released into the automotive market, the ZL1 drop-top will make its official debut in November at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Thanks to GM News for bringing us the announcement.
Just like the coupe, the ZL1 convertible will be equipped with a supercharged 6.2L LSA engine rated at 580 HP and 556 pound-feet of torque. The convertible will also share its Magnetic Ride suspension system and Performance Traction Management system with the ZL1 coupe.
Helping the convertible maintain a coupe-like driving feel will be several unique reinforcements. A tower-to-tower brace under the hood, underbody tunnel brace, a transmission support reinforcement brace , front “X” brace and stiffener cradle, and rear “V” underbody braces will come standard on the convertible to insure minimal cowl and steering wheel shakes commonly found in convertibles. Additional structural reinforcements, including a hydroformed tube in the A-pillars, reinforced front hinge pillar, inner reinforcement bracket in the windshield header and reinforced rockers will also come on the convertible model to reduce vibrations and unwanted noise.
Backed by a powerful engine, innovative GM performance systems and extra reinforcements for the body and chassis, the ZL1 convertible is set to perform just as well as the coupe. This means it will surely give other performance convertibles, such as the ‘11 Porsche 911 Turbo S and the ‘11 Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang, a run for their money.
We look forward to seeing the ZL1 convertible in person. With Camaro chief engineer, Al Oppenheiser stating, “This is a car that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face every time you drop the top – or hit the gas,” we’re sure the car won’t disappoint.
