Florida Files: Rental Camaro Theft Thwarted by Four Flat Tires

SFL Nadelhoffer [2]

Judging by Nadelhoffer’s mugshot, the joyride didn’t end too well…

We’ve all seen Gone in 60 Seconds. The remake film from 2000 features an all-star cast and an elusive Mustang that always gets Nicolas Cage’s character in trouble. It’s a unicorn car – no matter how hard he tries to steal it, something always goes wrong.

Joshua Nadelhoffer, 29, is not a professional car thief. If he was, he wouldn’t have been foolish enough to (allegedly) try to steal a 2013 Camaro SS from a Hertz Rent-A-Car parking lot at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Not only that, but he surely would have had the foresight to know that leaving out of the entrance would have resulted in flat tires thanks to the spike strip mounted across the driveway – designed to keep would-be car thieves from doing exactly what Nadelhoffer did.

According to the Florida Sun-Sentinel [3], he jumped in the car, and upon attempting to leave, the man at the Hertz gate did everything he could to keep Nadelhoffer from taking the Camaro. Nadlehoffer responded by crashing through the gate, driving over the spikes, and hopped on the I-95 – with three flat tires – only to get caught by the police 3 hours and 15 miles down the highway – with four flat tires.

Apparently, he’s quite a regular in the area jailhouses with priors of assault, DUI, and other legal no-nos, racking up no fewer than five arrests since February. We’re not ones to bash people and their personal problems, but you sort of have to wonder about the mental health of this particular individual. I mean, we get the wanting to reenact Smokey and the Bandit or Gone in 60 with the whole police chase thing, but doing it in a car with multiple flat tires is just doomed to fail.

Watch the arraignment…
