When EFI conversion kits first hit the aftermarket, there was a lot to learn – from both manufacturer and end consumer. The initial fear for the consumer, of course, was that they weren’t ready to plug into a laptop to map the fuel curve.
Even though technology is getting better and systems are getting smarter, that doesn’t mean we have plug in to convert to EFI. And now, it also doesn’t mean we have to pay more for it, especially with the news just released from Fuel Air Spark Technology (FAST).
Self-tuning EFI conversions are here, and despite that initial cringe that sent people running back to their beloved carburetors, plugging into a laptop is no longer necessary. Newer systems, such as the FAST EZ-EFI, allow enthusiasts to install their own EFI conversion, answer a few simple questions on the included handheld, and then drive the car so the computer can do its own learning, and let you enjoy the ride.
Dropping just below the $900 mark, the current basic EZ-EFI self-tuning fuel injection kit has seen roughly a 50 percent drop in pricing to be competitive with the market. The base kit includes the 4150-style throttle body with sensors and fuel injectors, the full harness and ECU, a wide-band O2 sensor, and a full color handheld touchscreen.
Add an inline fuel pump ($1199.99) or in-tank fuel pump ($1299.99) and you’re all set to see better starts, smoother idle, and better economy. Both fuel pump kits also include a fuel filter, pressure regulator, and gauge, fittings, and fuel hose – everything needed to convert from carburetor to throttle body fuel injection. Each kit is capable of supporting up to 650 horsepower in a naturally aspirated configuration.
If you’ve been sitting on the fence thinking about converting to an EFI system, FAST just made the decision more attractive. The EZ-EFI will work with any ignition setup, including HEI, and doesn’t require you to know anything about fuel curves or fuel mapping – it starts learning as soon as you start driving and constantly makes adjustments as you drive.
