If so inclined, you could shortly be riding in one of the most iconic of American cars from the fifties. Currently listed on eBay is this 1957 Chevrolet Nomad station wagon, located in Montgomery, TX. The seller is open to best offer bids, though the price being sought is $45,000.
According to the seller, this car is equipped with the 283cui V8, which was new for 1957, and a manual transmission. The odometer reading is listed as a rather amazing 19023 miles. The interior and exterior of the car reflect that kind of mileage accordingly.
There is no indication whether or not this car was built with fuel injection or carburetion. The former are extremely rare, though the ’57 Nomad itself was not built in huge numbers that year, either.
The idea of a “sport wagon” had been proposed for the 1955 model line by Chevrolet design studio head Clare MacKichan. Stylist Carl Renner had made a concept sketch that caught GM head of styling, Harley Earl’s eye.
Earl ordered a station wagon version be built as one of three Corvette “idea cars” to be shown the 1954 Motorama in New York City. The reaction was so favorable that the order was given to add a station wagon to the 1955 Chevrolet lineup, a feat that reportedly had to be done in two days. Many of the design details from the dream car were successfully carried over to the production car and gave the Nomad a unique status.
The auction for this Nomad expires on May 10th, but full contact information is provided in case you miss it. If you cannot get to the seller in Texas, having an independent inspection done is always recommended before bidding in an online vehicle sale.
