General Motors has pulled itself up by the bootstraps (thanks to a little help from Uncle Sam) and now the great American car company is turning a profit for the first time in years. Not only that, but the quality, fit, and finish of their cars is substantially better. But GM is far from done evolving. If anything, GM has only just begun its transformation.

The Detroit Free Press reports that GM is preparing to unveil a new model with a new name for 2013 both for sale and NASCAR racing. Back in January, GM lifted the veil on two new concepts “inspired” by Millenials, i.e. Generation Y. While the Cruze-based Tru 140S front-drive concept didn’t really do anything for us, the red 130R “baby Camaro” concept with rear-wheel drive raised more than a few eyebrows. That’s not to say GM is planning a small, cheap rear-drive sports car…but they might be.

We do know that whatever the new car is, it will replace the Impala for the 2013 NASCAR season. Another possibility is the “return” of the Pontiac G8 as the Chevy Caprice. GM is already selling the Caprice to police departments nationwide. However, the Freep piece goes on to say that the name of the new car is not currently in the Chevy lineup…which may mean the Caprice won’t be a Caprice at all. A Chevelle perhaps? Nova? Maybe a new name altogether?

We’ll have to wait until next year to be sure, so let the rampant speculation commence!
