Watching a NASCAR race, you expect to see some sort of accident and consequent fire during any given leg of competition, but fans and drivers alike got quite the shock last week when the 2014 Chevy SS Pace Car caught on fire while leading traffic around the Daytona International Speedway during a Sprint Unlimited exhibition race. But have no fear! Chevy just announced that the SS wasn’t down for long and in fact, was back in action at the Daytona 500 on Sunday February 23rd, according to Motor Authority.
Last week we brought you footage of the 2014 Chevy SS Pace Car wheeling into pit lane at the NASCAR Sprint Unlimited exhibition race due to a fire that appeared to be coming from the car’s trunk. Though the cabin of the car filled with smoke quickly and flames were visible by the time the car came to a stop on the side of the track, both the driver and passenger made it out of the vehicle safely.
Fortunately, the incident didn’t completely eliminate the Chevy SS from its future pacing . According to Motor Authority, a now red Chevy SS was back in use on Friday February 21st, two days prior to the model’s comeback to the track at Daytona.
While there has been speculation on the root cause of the issue, it was determined that the fire originated with the aftermarket electrical work housed in the trunk of the car. This electrical work is used to run the light bar and other integrated caution lights. With the SS back on the track, we hope this means that all electrical issues have been figured out.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series continues on March 2nd as competitors head to Phoenix for the Profit on CNBC 500 race.
