We’ve all seen a cop show at some time or another in which police catch someone flying down the street at a high rate of speed. Usually, the police go after the idiot tempting fate. However, a video recently posted on Jalopnik.com shows a Camaro hitting 157mph on a supposed police radar gun somewhere in Texas without repercussion. While the video does show a car hitting the 157 mark on a radar gun mounted on the dash of a vehicle pulled to the side of the road, there are too many things that just don’t scream cop cam.
The verdict is that the video is fake, just some kids out messing around with a radar gun. The video shows only a thin sliver of the interior of the car in which the radar gun was mounted so it is unclear what type of vehicle the video is filmed from. From the sounds of it, there is a police radio in the vehicle, but this doesn’t make it a police car. In fact, you can buy a police scanner at many pawn shops for about $30. Apparently, it is also legal for a civilian to possess a radar gun if they have a valid reason for owning one- for example, to capture the speed of a thrown baseball. This begs the question- is seeing if your friend can break 150 mph in his car a “valid” reason?
It’s not a surprise that this video is a fake. We don’t know many police officers who would post up a video of them testing their buddy’s car for a high speed using law enforcement equipment. Whoever posted the video initially to YouTube has since made the video private, meaning that even if you have a YouTube account, you must be invited by the person who posted it in order to see the video, or any information about it, on the site. We’re glad that Jalopnik writer Mike Spinelli caught the video before it went private so that we can all see these Texas shenanigans.
