Though the supercharged Camaro ZL1 may have more raw horsepower, Chevy doesn’t mince words when it comes to naming the Z/28 as top dog of the Camaro lineup. With a $75,000 price tag that includes a host of racing features and a 505 horsepower LS7 engine crammed between the shock towers, it’s hard for us mere mortals to imagine an even more extreme car.
That’s the job for the engineers at Callaway Cars, who have waved their magic wand over the Camaro Z/28 and come up with a supercharged version good for 652 horsepower, reports Automobile Magazine. Callaway will only build ten of these track monsters, ensuring that they will be rare beasts indeed.
Descriptively called the SC652 package, Callaway has turned to Eaton for a TVS supercharger that adds 147 horsepower to the stock 7.0 liter LS7 engine. Along with a low-restriction exhaust and a new air intake, the supercharged engine is primed and ready to deliver 652 horsepower and 620 pound-feet of torque. The closest factory competitor is the out-of-production Corvette ZR1, and even that is outgunned by the supercharged Z/28.
But other than that, Callaway has left well-enough alone, as the track-ready Z/28 would be hard to improve upon without serious investment. Keep in mind that the Z/28 lapped the Nurburgring about four seconds faster than the ZL1, despite having a 75 horsepower handicap. Now imagine how much faster it would be around the ‘Ring with that supercharger attached? With just ten examples planned, very few people even have the opportunity to find out. But what a lucky few they are.
