In the 50’s, 60’s and early 70’s drag racing was America’s second pastime almost rivaling baseball. In those days the nation went crazy every summer Sunday when they say the flip top funny cars, the nitro dragsters, the super stock machines and the gassers battle each at the strip. The gassers were a favorite among rodders and spectators a like as they were affordable used cars that did battle down the 1320.
Many of these gassers were self funded or had local sponsors. This lead to them becoming local legends across every American town small and large. These local legends had cult followings during the golden age of drag racing all to fade away in 70’s after gas and insurance prices sky rocketed. Many of these cars spent the 70’s as a street rods, the 80’s and 90’s as a pro streeters and the 2000’s as a pro touring ride.
Though rare, a few did survive and are a treat to see.
Recently we came across this 1956 Chevy drag car on eBay. Though she may have rust on the roof and a “patina paint job” she’s a relic from a by gone era. She raced under the moniker Blue II and had a sponsorship from Riley Auto Supply ran by crew chief J.P. Riley. She likely ran a 427 mill and a 4 speed Munice back in the day. She probably put on a real show to with plenty of pop clutching launches and tire smoke being thrown over 50 feet in the air.The ’56 Chevy is for sale on eBay, it currently has no engine or transmission and would make an excellent project for a rodder looking to build a street rod, someone looking to building a drag racing machine like Jeff Lutz or restore it to its former 1960s racing glory.
