Gene Winfield, the legendary custom car builder, unveiled “Desert Sunset” at last year’s SEMA trade show in Las Vegas. We took dozens of shots and talked to Winfield in preparation for a car feature surrounding vehicles that were unveiled at the aftermarket automotive industries’ largest show. For some reason that car feature was never written or published by Rod Authority. Happily, we were able to relive the excitement of Winfield’s creation when we stumbled across a folder on our server with shots of the car. Not willing to miss the chance to share these shots with our loyal readers, we decided to publish them today.

Desert Sunset is substantial in the custom world because it contains all of the Winfield signature touches. The fabulous Winfield “fade” paint job, where two custom colors are carefully faded together at certain places on the body to produce an enhanced 3D look. Winfield’s stainless side pipes have become a standard on his recent builds in the past decade, and they can still be purchased at Winfield Rod & Custom shop. Winfield’s lowered look has become as popular as the man himself.

As for the peculiarities of the car, Winfield started with a 1952 fat-fendered Chevy two-door sedan. and focused on using tools from his tool supply partner, the Eastwood company. We could go on for hours about the “King of Kustoms” and his creations, but rather than use up that space with ink, let’s just let you admire the King’s work with these photos we shot at the event.
