What is going on at Lake Shawnee in Topeka Kansas? In the past 4 months they have pulled three vehicles from the depths of the lake. The first discovery was in June when a 1976 Oldsmobile was found in the lake. When they pulled the car from the lake it actually had human remains in the car! The remains were identified as 84 year-old Milwaukee man Leonard Jordan, who disappeared in 1984.
Although the police ruled out any foul play, it still makes one wonder what exactly happened. Well now the folks of Topeka have two new topics to discuss, when earlier this week the police pulled two new vehicles from the depths of the lake. According to The Topeka Capital Journal, A 1984 Camaro and a 1987 Cadillac Sedan DeVille were both pulled from the lake earlier this week.
According to the Capital-Journal report, “Several months ago, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism discovered what officials believed were two submerged vehicles as they tested new sonar equipment on the lake. They notified the parks police, who scheduled retrieval of the cars. The third car was found when pinpointing the location of one of the other vehicles.”
Neither the Camaro or the Cadillac had any remains in the car. Interestingly enough, both cars were first reported stolen in 1994 within four months of each other. Authorities reported that they found the Camaro in nearly 30 feet of water and thought it had been submerged for nearly 20 years.
Todd Stallbaumer, a sergeant with the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office told the local paper he was relieved about not finding anything of interest. “This was the best-case scenario for the conditions that we had was recovering these two vehicles with nothing of interest inside.”
We think it’s time they scan the entire lake, who knows what other gems are sitting at the bottom of Lake Shawnee.
