According to GMAuthority.com, the 2016 Chevy Cruze will be the only vehicle of it’s class to come with a 7-speed, dual clutch transmission when it launches in 2015. Actually, when it does meet the market, it will be one of the only of its kind to offer an automated-manual transmission at all, only competing with a handful of vehicles from other auto manufacturers. With little competition and the new 7-speed dual clutch incorporation, the Cruze has the potential to lead the class out of the gate.
The overall mission of GM is to achieve best-in-class in these areas with the Chevy Cruze:
- Fuel economy
- Ride comfort
- Emissions
- Quiet performance
The 7-speed auto-manual transmission for the Cruze was developed with the help of the Shanghai Automotive Corporation, Chinese venture partner with GM. This transmission will be optional on most models, and standard on high-end trim packages.
Key competition includes the Ford Focus, Mazda 3, Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, and a range of VW models. However, none of these offer a 7-speed dual clutch drivetrain anywhere close to the same price range as the Chevy Cruze.
A range of Ecotec engines and direct injection and turbos will power the new transmissions. The 2016 model was also put on a diet in hopes that, in combination with the powertrain, it will see a 14-21% improvement in fuel economy.
The new Chevy Cruze should be at dealerships early 2015, and the price point is likely to start out under $20,000 for the base model.
