It’s no surprise that for high horsepower engines you will need a little more clamping force to get that transmission locked up to your flywheel, so the Centerforce DYAD Drive System has been a popular addition to racers everywhere. Typically, these high horsepower cars have been found at racetracks; but one type of racing can benefit from even more clamping force, and that’s the Pro-Touring crowd.
New this year and brought out to the PRI show in Indiana, Centerforce showed us their triple disc clutch specifically designed to keep clamping force to a maximum and to prevent any slippage when the revs are high and the speed is lower. This small, 8-3/4-inch clutch is a very lightweight clutch, coming in at about 28 pounds, compared to a typical DYAD clutch at about 47 pounds.
The triple-disc clutch helps to reduce the inertia for the Pro-Touring crowd, for Coyote and LS engines, for now, with SBC and BBC coming soon. The triple-disc kit is available with organic and semi-metallic friction material. The billet housing and small diameter keeps the weight down, and gives this clutch a little better street manners, though it is designed for the track.
Looking at the composition of the clutch assembly, one disc is driven by the transmission input shaft, and the other two are driven by that disc. The flywheel has also been lightened up to keep the weight down, meaning quicker revs to get the power to the ground.
