Spotlight: ’67 Chevelle Super Sport 396

First introduced in 1964, the Chevrolet Chevelle added a new, intermediate-sized entry in the division’s product line. It was no coincidence that the car’s 115-inch wheelbase matched that of the hugely popular tri-five Chevys from the previous decade. A Super Sport model was available, based on the 283cui four-barrel V8, rated at 220hp.

The Chevy II-inspired bodywork was replaced in 1966, bringing a contemporary blend of smooth lines, a “coke bottle” side profile, curved side glass and classic front end styling. This body style would forever be characterized by the unique roof treatment, with long, curving C-pillars and the rear glass set in on a different angle, making it look rather embedded.

For 1967, the SS-model gained F70x14 nylon-belted, low profile tires that served well to backup the optional front disc brakes. As in the previous year, the 325-bhp version of the 396cui V8 was standard.

GM management had recently moved to protect the performance position of the Corvette, and prevented any other car from having a power/weight ratio better than 1/10. Curiously, the dealer-installed L78 option remained available and the 600-odd cars built with it carried 375 hp, based on a single 4-bbl carburetor and an 11:1 compression ratio.

The ’67 Chevelle SS was available as either a Sport Coupe or a convertible body style. The particular example shown here was built with the optional M21 Muncie 4-speed transmission and a 12-bolt, PosiTraction rear axle. Under the hood, you’ll find the correct ‘ED’ code, 396/325 horsepower motor bolted up to it. The combination made for a stealthy and formidable muscle car.

While the introduction of the Chevrolet Camaro that same year draw attention away from the Chevelle, many will argue that it offered just as much performance in a more comfortable package.

Coming up for auction at Mecum’s Kansas City Spring Auction, this Chevelle SS has recently gone through a professional, frame-off restoration and had new wiring harnesses installed at the same time. Originally heavily optioned from the factory, the car also has power brakes and steering, factory head rests, the console gauge package, the factory ‘blinker’ tachometer, factory AM radio and a real wood steering wheel.

While running on new red line tires, the car still has its original jack, owner’s manual and warranty booklet.

The Mecum Kansas City Spring Auction runs Friday and Saturday this week, March 11 – 12th, at the Kansas City Convention Center – Bartle Hall. The gates open at 8:00 a.m., CT each day with bidding starting at 11:00 daily. For additional information, please check the event web site.
