Bob Curran 4005 XS Route 66 Superbowl

Tuesday night – The cars are loaded and the motor home is ready to roll for the Superbowl of Drag racing. The guys will leave Wednesday afternoon to drop the rig off. Thursday, we will head down to the track.

Thursday – Bob, our son, Jeremy, and I arrived at the track to be greeted by temperatures above 90. I kept thinking I should have stayed home and swam in the pool. Nonetheless, it’s race season and this is what we do. Jeremy and I unpacked everything from our truck and got our pit set up while Bob got the Vette ready for Test n Tune. The car ran pretty decent going 8.22 and an 8.28 60′ times were off by a tenth and we resolved that and Friday we were going 8.14’s

Friday – In true Joliet form, the weather is another scorcher but a few friends managed to make it out for support. The Vette was running great !!!! Our first pass for qualifying Bob laid down an 8.14. This put him in the #2 spot. I am so happy for Bob and our team, the car is running well. The fuel injection seems to be coming around for Bob. Round 2 of qualifying went well, unfortunately another racer stepped up his program and we dropped to the #3 spot. Still our team couldn’t be happier with the numbers. It was time to break out the Rockband and drinks!!! NMRA racer Scott Lovell (of Swill racing) joined the band. My son, Jeremy played drums and our friend Donnie’s son played bass.

Saturday – RAIN RAIN go away, we all want to race today. Today was a VERY interesting day. After a bad storm came through late last night. It was time for Bob to go from driver to crew chief. Our son Jeremy had a Jr. Dragster race in Union Grove, WI on Saturday morning. Now most people would say 2 hour drive one way, forget it, but when your son is currently the points leader by 60, you don’t blow it off. We woke up to rain thinking it was raining there as well. Made a few calls. Nope, no rain in Wisconsin, his race was on. So Bob and Jeremy put the dragster in the back of his suburban, it sticks out about 3 feet or so and headed to Da Grove. Jeremy’s race usually ends about 12:30 or so, if he doesn’t stay for the trophy race, so Bob knew he would make it back in plenty of time for first round of eliminations. The raining in Joliet would help us secure that. Of course it started raining once the guys got to the track and that race was canceled. Drove there for nothing. Oh well. Made it back in time for more rain and then the drying out.

Bob FINALLY raced first round about 6:30pm and he won with an 8.16. Whoo hoo we are going to round 2 on Sunday. Again time to break out Rockband and celebrate.

Sunday – My eyes are barely open and I am sitting in the stands at 9:15am waiting for Bob to run. Here he goes…… WIN light for us with an 8.14. Mike Post put it on the bumper and went for a nice ride. We will face Tony Orts in the next round. I get back to pits to see and unhappy look the faces of Eric ( crew chief) and Bob. Looks like we nipped # 2, no time to fix it correctly. The guys do what they can and we will show up when it’s our time. The kids and I talk to Bob in the Motor home and tell him that we are proud of him and all the car accomplished this weekend, win or lose we should be happy with the way the car ran. Time to go back up to the lanes……….we lost, which we knew was going to happen, too bad too because it would have been a good race and a possible win with the times our car was running.

Our car ran better at this race than it has all year. We had a great time at the Superbowl. It is nice to see all of our friends and fellow racers out having a great time. See you all in Milan!
